The Return (15) at The Film Place
The final chapter of the Odyssey when Ulysses returns to find his Court besieged by impatient, warlike suitors of his wife Penelope, the affairs of state in chaos and his son, Telemachus, distrusting the suitors but trying to come to terms with the continuing absence of his father. Disguising himself as an impoverished beggar, Ulysses remains incognito while ruefully observing how things have fallen apart. The magnificent story telling of Homer never loses its fascination, or its grip on the triumphs and failings of the human race. Binoche as Penelope and Fiennes as Ulysses portray the light and the dark with finesse and understanding.

Dead of Winter (15) at The Film Place
Thrills and spills all the way and Emma Thompson brandishing a shot-gun! A kidnap, a frozen lake, a remote cabin and a terminally ill hospital employee with maniacal tendencies will keep you on the edge of your seat! Thompson plays Barb, a widow about to scatter her husband’s ashes over Lake Hilda (North Minnesota), when she stumbles across the kidnapped victim, Leah. In attempting to rescue Leah, Barb is pitted against her two kidnappers, who will stop at nothing to prevent her escape. There will be blood and a lot of shooting but the cinematography is brilliant, creating an icy chill to an otherwise spectacular winter landscape.

Lillingstone Lecture: What is Smell?
Smell is our least understood sense – an ancient chemical language spoken directly to the brain.
In this lecture, Dr Turin will explore how molecules become sensations, how odour is written into molecular structure, and how the nose may act not just as a lock-and-key detector but as a tiny spectroscope, sensing the vibrations of the molecules around us. From the mysteries of olfaction to the artistry of perfume, he will journey from quantum physics to biology, and ultimately to art.

I Swear (15) at The Film Place
And not by the Grace of God! Rather by the frustrating struggles of Tourette syndrome experienced by John Davidson. You might be shocked by the opening sequence of Mr Davidson using the ‘F’ word while receiving an MBE. But watch on and lend your ears to his touching story. In 1983, John is a young lad growing up in Scotland pursuing a promising career in football but then involuntary swearing and tics creep into his mannerisms. Misunderstood by teachers and parents, he treads a downward path until he meets Dottie, an unflappable mental nurse. This is a real-life, feel-good film with smart, subtle comedy. He did, after all, achieve an MBE!

Downton Abbey - The Grand Finale (PG) at The Film Place
Hard to believe that the Downton Abbey saga has been a much-loved story on our TV and Film Screens for 25 years, but it seems that its creator, Julian Fellowes, has concluded that it now needs a fond farewell. It’s the 1930s and the Crawley family fortunes are teetering, beset by the financial crash and Lady Mary’s scandalous divorce. Societal change is afoot both upstairs and downstairs. Will Downton and its doughty inhabitants rise to the new challenges? The film pays a fitting tribute to the late Maggie Smith, whose presence is touchingly remembered. What better way to start our new season in January 2026?

Lee (15) at The Film Place
A fascinating, powerful portrayal of Lee Miller by Kate Winslet raises this film into award winning material. Lee Miller’s career reads like impossible fiction. From model and muse of Man Ray, to world famous photojournalist in WW2, taking the avant garde world of the 1930s by storm on her way, it’s a glamorous story. But not easy to expose the contradictions within her fierce bravado. Kate Winslet nails it as she gives us a mesmerizing insight into Lee’s extraordinary life and personality. “Don’t even think of missing it” says The Observer.

Creative Stitch and Mend Workshop
Description:
Turn your repairs into part of your garment’s history and stitch tears and holes into beautiful features. Suitable for beginners, you’ll learn a mixture of hand stitch techniques suitable for a variety of mending projects. Save a favourite jumper by patching or darning; rework and recreate clothes whilst learning the sustainable value of repair. Bring along your piece of clothing that needs to be repaired or rejuvenated and between us it will be transformed. This event will be led by textile artists and experts from Black Swans Studio.
During this workshop you will learn 3 mending skills
1. Creative Patchwork: Repair for mending holes, tears and rips, reinforcing areas with extra stitches to secure the patch. Use a patterned fabric or one of our stencils to add an applique shape to make a decorative feature of your mend.
Darning: Use darning wools and other natural yarns from our collection. Learn basket stitch to create a weave like structure over the hole using warp and weft threads. Choose contrasting colours to create bold checks and stripes or create geometric shapes and graphic patterns to transform and repair your knitwear.
Visible Mending: Running stitch or Sashiko, translated as little stabs in Japan for reinforcing fine and thinning fabric. This technique is also used in conjunction with basket stitch to create a stable mend.
Included in this workshop:
· Paper stitch guide
Needles & Threads in various colours and thicknesses
Fabric Scraps, different patterns and textures for patching
What to bring and wear:
· Bring fabric or clothes you’d like to upcycle
