'Stowe and Sir John Vanbrugh: Architecture, Politics and Power' Talk
Jun
29
to Aug 31

'Stowe and Sir John Vanbrugh: Architecture, Politics and Power' Talk

Sir John Vanbrugh was one of the most remarkable figures of the early eighteenth century: architect, playwright, soldier and even spy. This exhibition explores his life, his architectural achievements, and his connection to Stowe House.

Vanbrugh was responsible for some of Britain’s most dramatic buildings, including Castle Howard, Blenheim Palace and Seaton Delaval Hall. His work at Stowe began when Sir Richard Temple, a fellow member of the influential Kit-Cat Club, commissioned him to transform the house and help shape the gardens.

Through historic illustrations, newly commissioned photographs and original plans, the exhibition written by historian Rory Fraser reveals how Vanbrugh helped turn Stowe into one of the great aristocratic houses of its age.

Visitors can also discover the Vanbrugh-designed features that still survive in the famous Stowe gardens today.

Free with admission to Stowe House – please note that tickets are released exactly one month in advance.

Lillingstone Lecture: The Four Big Questions in Space and Astronomy, by Dame Dr Maggie Aderin

This talk is a special celebration of 10 years of the Lillingstone Lecture Series at the Royal Latin School, in partnership with the Lillingstone Trust.

Dame Dr Maggie Aderin’s talk, The Four Big Questions in Space and Astronomy, takes audiences on an inspiring journey from our own night sky to the furthest reaches of the Universe. Blending cutting-edge science with accessible storytelling, Maggie explores some of the biggest mysteries humanity is trying to solve – including topics such as how the Universe began, whether life exists beyond Earth and what the future of space exploration may hold.

Dame Dr Maggie Aderin is a space scientist whose passion is presenting science to a general audience and demonstrating that you ‘don’t need a brain the size of a small planet’ to understand, participate in and enjoy science. She studied at Imperial College London, where she obtained her degree in Physics and her Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering. She has spent her career making novel, bespoke instrumentation in both the industrial and academic environments including working on the James Webb Space Telescope and various satellite monitoring climate change. To further share her passion for science, in 2004 Maggie founded Science Innovation Ltd. Through this company she conducts public engagement activities, sharing her love of space and encouraging underrepresented communities to take up STEM – Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths. To date Maggie has directly spoken to well over  650,000 people around the world. As well as public speaking she is a BAFTA nominated TV presenter, co-hosting the world’s longest-running science television programme, The Sky at Night. She is also an author with her children’s book Am I made of Stardust winning a Royal Society book prize. Maggie won the Institute of Physics gold medal for exceptional services to science education and physics communication; she was the President of the British Science Association and is the current Chancellor of the University of Leicester. She was made a Dame in the 2023 New Year’s Honours list and in December 2025 she presented the 200-year anniversary Royal Institution Christmas lectures. Her Memoir, Starchild, came out in February 2026.

The Lillingstone Lectures are a series of free lectures held at the Royal Latin School that are open to all members of the local community, not only to Royal Latin School families. To book a seat at any of these lectures, please see The Royal Latin School website for details.

Outdoor Theatre Performance: As You Like It

Outdoor Theatre Performance: As You Like It

Outdoor Theatre Performance: As You Like It performed by Illyria at Stowe House.

In this play Shakespeare explores Love in all its guises.

Four pairs of soulmates meet in the mysterious Forest of Arden. One pair leap straight into bed. Another pair are instantaneously dumbstruck by each other’s beauty and pledge their undying troth. The third pair torment each other: he showers chaste love upon her which she haughtily rejects - yet secretly she enjoys the flattery. The fourth pair go further still, playfully blurring their roles and identities to such an extent that flirting becomes more pain than pleasure, and Love itself is pushed to the limit of its endurance – and beyond. Throughout the summer Shakespeare’s iconic comedy will be performed where its action is set – in the great outdoors, by a 5-strong cast of classically trained professional actors. Multi international award-winning Illyria has an unmatched reputation for excellence, forged over three decades, that dominates the outdoor touring theatre sector. Join them this summer for a memorable night of laughter and romance under the stars.

Tickets must be purchased in advance. Please see the Stowe House website for more information.

This is an outdoor performance. It is recommend that you bring blankets/chairs etc, to sit on.

Gates open from from 5:30pm, for a 6:30 start time. The performance will last approximately 140 minutes (with a 20 minute interval).

Picnics are welcome at this performance.

Outdoor Theatre: Pirates of Penzance performed by Illyria

Join Illyria for a memorable evening at Stowe, full of wit and charm!

Frederick, accidentally apprenticed to Pirates as a child, is indentured to the Pirate King until his 21st birthday. On the day he reaches 21 he leaves the ship, announcing that he now intends to dedicate his life to the Pirates’ destruction. The Pirate King checks the contract’s small print – and realises that as Frederick’s birthday is 29th February on a leap year he has only had four birthdays and is actually indentured for another 63 years. With only the Penzance constabulary to protect him, will Frederick be forced to serve the pirates until he is 84? And will his sweetheart, Mabel, wait for him that long? Performed by a six-strong cast of actor/singers with fully orchestrated accompaniment, The Pirates of Penzance boasts such gloriously memorable songs as “To be a Pirate King!”; “Modern Major General” and “A Policeman’s Lot is Not a Happy One”. With razor sharp satire and glittering wit, it remains as fresh as if it had been written today.

Tickets must be purchased in advance and are available through Ticket Source.

Further information is available through the National Trust website.

Virtual Heritage Open Days at Stowe House

‍If you can’t make it to Stowe House in person this year for Heritage Open Days, there is the opportunity to join them online and uncover the stories that shaped everyday life at this remarkable site.

Across the week, they will be sharing a series of exclusive videos on their Facebook and Instagram channels, exploring the “Everyday Histories” of Stowe House. From its origins as the country seat of the Temple-Grenville family to its present role as an independent school and visitor attraction, these stories bring to life the people whose daily work has sustained and shaped the estate over generations.

You can meet the modern team caring for Stowe today, from librarians and cleaners to groundskeepers and house staff, and discover how their roles echo those of the historic workforce who once kept the estate running. Gain insight into areas rarely highlighted, including the stables, brewhouse, bakehouse, and laundry, as they explore how these working spaces supported the rhythm of daily life.

Delve into the archives to uncover fascinating objects and records, including an 1848 sales catalogue that offers a glimpse into the possessions and experiences of servants, helping to imagine their lives in greater detail. Discover hidden corners of the House, from discreet service routes to tucked-away rooms, designed to support the smooth running of the household out of sight of its grand public spaces.

The series also reveals unexpected and personal stories, from newly uncovered school archives to glimpses of workers captured in historic paintings and engravings, offering rare insight into the individuals behind the scenes. Together, these moments build a rich picture of everyday life at Stowe, past and present.

Whether your interest lies in social history, architecture, or conservation, this virtual experience brings Stowe House to you, wherever you are.

Share your discoveries and join the conversation using #HODs.

‘Vanbrugh’s Alterations and Additions to Stowe House’ Talk

‘Vanbrugh’s Alterations and Additions to Stowe House’ Talk

Architect Francis Terry presents new research into Sir John Vanbrugh’s architectural contribution to Stowe House, reconsidering the scale and ambition of his designs and their later alteration. This talk is one of a lecture series held monthly, exploring shared themes from the individual perspectives of our speakers and reflecting the continuing debate that makes Stowe so compelling.

This lecture will explain the ideas and influences on a series of recently completed drawings by architect Francis Terry, that investigate and reconstruct Sir John Vanbrugh’s contribution to the architecture of Stowe House.

Vanbrugh’s involvement has long been obscured by limited surviving documentation and by extensive later alterations to the building. Working from a drawing of Stowe by Vanbrugh’s frequent collaborator, Charles Bridgeman, the early plans by William Cleere, and the Rigaud views of 1739, the lecture will explore how Vanbrugh sought to alter and adapt the existing late seventeenth-century house. The lecture will also re-examine Vanbrugh’s likely intentions for the North and South fronts, including towers, porticos, and colonnades that were later simplified or altered—possibly by James Gibbs following Vanbrugh’s death. Particular attention will be given to the ‘houses of office’ on the east and west ends, the only part clearly identified as Vanbrugh’s work. This study offers new insights into how much Vanbrugh’s bold Baroque vision was modified or erased within a

A 60-minute talk followed by audience questions (doors shall open at 5.45pm).

Tickets for this event are £3.50 each and can be booked through the Stowe House Website. Booking is essential.

Hamlet (15) at The Film Place

Of all Shakespeare’s tragedies, Hamlet is the one that most easily springs to mind and is considered by many as the most sought after role in the bard’s output.  A glance at some of the notable actors who have famously portrayed the Prince of Denmark tells you of its continuing magnetism. Here, Riz Ahmed gives an electrifying performance in a thoroughly novel setting as he wrestles with his conscience in the corrupt court of his uncle, fighting the demons that the murder of his father has unleashed. Unabashedly contemporary, the court of Elsinore has been re-imagined within the elite Hindu society of 21st century London and the urban underworld that lurks beneath the glamour.

Sir John Vanbrugh and the Kit-Kat Club. A lecture at Stowe
Jun
11

Sir John Vanbrugh and the Kit-Kat Club. A lecture at Stowe

Ophelia Field, author of The Kit-Cat Club, and Vanbrugh biographer Rory Fraser discuss the Club’s under-appreciated centrality to Vanbrugh’s eclectic career and to British culture. This talk is one of a lecture series held monthly.

Vanbrugh joined publisher Jacob Tonson’s Kit-Cat Club soon after The Relapse debuted on the London stage in late 1696, remained a member until the Club dissolved in the 1720s, and retained a deep fondness for its fellowship and friendships until the end of his life. Several key steps in his surprising career depended upon the patronage of Kit-Cat aristocrats, and this was no accident.

Field, author of The Favourite: Sarah Duchess of Marlborough, published her group biography of the Kit-Cats in 2008 – the first in-depth modern study of the Club – and argued that its far-reaching role in British politics and culture had been previously overlooked. Fraser’s forthcoming biography of Vanbrugh will extend this argument, showing how important it was for Vanbrugh to count himself among the Kit-Cat wits, and to pursue the patriotic cultural mission he shared with its other creative members.

Tying the story of the Club’s evolution and Vanbrugh’s involvement over several decades to the Stowe landscape, as developed by Kit-Cat member Richard Temple, 1st Viscount Cobham, this authors-in-conversation event will surface historical connections, conundrums and heated rivalries.

Lillingstone Lecture:The Impact of Climate Change on Insects, by Dr Richard Harrington

This lecture explores how climate change is reshaping the lives of insects — not just the pests that threaten crops, but also the beneficial species we rely on and those now at risk of disappearing altogether. With a particular focus on insects of conservation concern and pest species, it draws on decades of research led by Dr Richard Harrington during his time heading the Rothamsted Insect Survey, one of the world’s longest-running insect monitoring programmes. Although now retired, Dr Harrington remains deeply involved in entomology, contributing his expertise through voluntary roles with the Royal Entomological Society, the National Trust, and Butterfly Conservation.

The Lillingstone Lectures are a series of free lectures held at the Royal Latin School that are open to all members of the local community, not only to Royal Latin School families. To book a seat at any of these lectures, please see The Royal Latin School website for details.

Song Sung Blue (12A) at The Film Place

Song Sung Blue (12A) at The Film Place

Based on a true story, the film features a married couple who have previously found little success and who now form a joyous Neil Diamond tribute band. Peter Bradshaw in the Guardian says, “The feelgood flavour won’t prepare you for the way the plot savagely twists like an unsafe fairground ride. I actually had my eyes closed and my mouth open at certain points and was grabbing the seat in front of me with both fists. It may also yet prove that, yes, Hugh Jackman really is the greatest showman. This is a never-say-die story and its cheerful optimism makes it a calorific treat.”

That They May Face The Rising Sun (15) at The Film Place

In this dramatization of the much-loved John McGahern novel, Joe and Kate return from living in London to Joe’s rural Ireland. This subtle, gentle drama, sees them learning to fit in with their neighbours, finding a quiet stoicism, lyrically in step with the stirring compositions of cloud-swept hillsides and sheep being herded down deep lanes. Jonathan Romney in the Financial Times says, “With a sound design steeped in birdsong, and a spare piano score, here is a film that unwraps its mysteries slowly, revealing under its quiet surface the human condition writ delicate but deep”.
