WHAT’S ON
Saipan (15) at The Film Place
“A rare football movie that’s worth a replay” is how the Guardian describes this film, which “replays” an infamous moment in the careers of Roy Keane and Mick McCarthy. Better known for his legendary captaincy of Manchester United, Keane was the star of the Irish football team who qualified for the 2002 World Cup in Japan under the management of Mick McCarthy. Neither men were known to mince their words and the bitter confrontation between them on the eve of the tournament led to McCarthy sacking Keane. Coogan (as McCarthy) and Hardwicke (as Keane) brilliantly portray the tensions and drama of the moment. (Wine will be available at this screening)

Hamnet (12A) at The Film Place
First the book by Maggie O’Farrell, then the play (with the RSC) and now the mesmerising film that dramatizes the tragic death of Hamnet, only son of Agnes and William Shakespeare and how his death (perhaps) led to the writing of Hamlet. That Hamnet died of the plague is true; whether the event spawned one of the greatest plays ever written is conjecture. But the film belongs to Jessie Buckley. Winner of both BAFTA & OSCAR Best Actress awards, she gives us a whole new image of Anne Hathaway (hitherto only associated with a cottage!) as a passionate, intelligent and independent wife and mother, careless of the Elizabethan strictures imposed on women but fiercely protective of her children. The final scenes will have you reaching for the tissues! (Wine will be available at the 2nd May screening

Plenty of star quality comedians in this almost farcical comedy of the revival of a marriage. It is loosely based on the career of British comedian, John Bishop, who related to Will Arnett how he became a stand up comic. After several years of marriage, Tess and Alex Novak deliberate on how they will agree to a separation while remaining friends and bring up their two boys. Arnett (co-author of the screenplay with Mark Chappell), plays husband Alex, who finding himself unable to pay the bill at the Comedy Cellar, signs up for a stand-up routine. Tess pursues an ambition to be the volleyball coach for the upcoming Olymics. However, fate intervenes to remind them that they still have a future together.

'Vanbrugh’s Garden Legacy at Stowe' Talk
Garden and landscape historian Richard Wheeler explores Sir John Vanbrugh’s influence on the early development of Stowe’s landscape gardens and the legacy of his ideas. This talk is one of a lecture series held monthly, exploring shared themes from the individual perspectives of our speakers and reflecting the continuing debate that makes Stowe so compelling.
Sir John Vanbrugh’s influence on the early development of the landscape gardens at Stowe between 1719 and 1726 can also be seen in the wider circle of landscapes created for leading military figures of the age, including the Duke of Marlborough at Blenheim. These gardens reflected a shared ideal that combined military achievement with learning and philosophical reflection.
Although little now survives of Vanbrugh’s original scheme at Stowe beyond the main garden axes, the thinking behind his design helped shape the landscape that followed. Later architects and garden designers adapted and expanded the gardens over time, adding their own buildings and monuments while working within the framework Vanbrugh had established.
This lecture explores Vanbrugh’s garden legacy at Stowe and considers the architects and designers who developed and reinterpreted his work in the decades that followed.
A 60-minute talk followed by audience questions (doors shall open at 5.45pm).
Tickets for this event are £3.50 each and can be booked through the Stowe House Website. Booking is essential.

An angry and bereaved young woman finds solace in training Mabel, a wild goshawk, to hunt and fly free, taking her to her own journey of resilience and healing. To play the role, Foy had the demanding task of training the hawk herself. The sequences involving her with this terrifying predator are spectacular, as are Foy’s own strange relationships with the bird and with unsympathetic colleagues. Deborah Ross in the Spectator says, “It is a career best for Foy, who will doubtless win many awards. I hope that the bird gets one too”.

That They May Face The Rising Sun (15) at The Film Place
In this dramatization of the much-loved John McGahern novel, Joe and Kate return from living in London to Joe’s rural Ireland. This subtle, gentle drama, sees them learning to fit in with their neighbours, finding a quiet stoicism, lyrically in step with the stirring compositions of cloud-swept hillsides and sheep being herded down deep lanes. Jonathan Romney in the Financial Times says, “With a sound design steeped in birdsong, and a spare piano score, here is a film that unwraps its mysteries slowly, revealing under its quiet surface the human condition writ delicate but deep”.

Song Sung Blue (12A) at The Film Place
Based on a true story, the film features a married couple who have previously found little success and who now form a joyous Neil Diamond tribute band. Peter Bradshaw in the Guardian says, “The feelgood flavour won’t prepare you for the way the plot savagely twists like an unsafe fairground ride. I actually had my eyes closed and my mouth open at certain points and was grabbing the seat in front of me with both fists. It may also yet prove that, yes, Hugh Jackman really is the greatest showman. This is a never-say-die story and its cheerful optimism makes it a calorific treat.”

Lillingstone Lecture:The Impact of Climate Change on Insects, by Dr Richard Harrington
This lecture explores how climate change is reshaping the lives of insects — not just the pests that threaten crops, but also the beneficial species we rely on and those now at risk of disappearing altogether. With a particular focus on insects of conservation concern and pest species, it draws on decades of research led by Dr Richard Harrington during his time heading the Rothamsted Insect Survey, one of the world’s longest-running insect monitoring programmes. Although now retired, Dr Harrington remains deeply involved in entomology, contributing his expertise through voluntary roles with the Royal Entomological Society, the National Trust, and Butterfly Conservation.
The Lillingstone Lectures are a series of free lectures held at the Royal Latin School that are open to all members of the local community, not only to Royal Latin School families. To book a seat at any of these lectures, please see The Royal Latin School website for details.
Sir John Vanbrugh and the Kit-Kat Club. A lecture at Stowe
Ophelia Field, author of The Kit-Cat Club, and Vanbrugh biographer Rory Fraser discuss the Club’s under-appreciated centrality to Vanbrugh’s eclectic career and to British culture. This talk is one of a lecture series held monthly.
Vanbrugh joined publisher Jacob Tonson’s Kit-Cat Club soon after The Relapse debuted on the London stage in late 1696, remained a member until the Club dissolved in the 1720s, and retained a deep fondness for its fellowship and friendships until the end of his life. Several key steps in his surprising career depended upon the patronage of Kit-Cat aristocrats, and this was no accident.
Field, author of The Favourite: Sarah Duchess of Marlborough, published her group biography of the Kit-Cats in 2008 – the first in-depth modern study of the Club – and argued that its far-reaching role in British politics and culture had been previously overlooked. Fraser’s forthcoming biography of Vanbrugh will extend this argument, showing how important it was for Vanbrugh to count himself among the Kit-Cat wits, and to pursue the patriotic cultural mission he shared with its other creative members.
Tying the story of the Club’s evolution and Vanbrugh’s involvement over several decades to the Stowe landscape, as developed by Kit-Cat member Richard Temple, 1st Viscount Cobham, this authors-in-conversation event will surface historical connections, conundrums and heated rivalries.

'Stowe and Sir John Vanbrugh: Architecture, Politics and Power' Talk
Sir John Vanbrugh was one of the most remarkable figures of the early eighteenth century: architect, playwright, soldier and even spy. This exhibition explores his life, his architectural achievements, and his connection to Stowe House.
Vanbrugh was responsible for some of Britain’s most dramatic buildings, including Castle Howard, Blenheim Palace and Seaton Delaval Hall. His work at Stowe began when Sir Richard Temple, a fellow member of the influential Kit-Cat Club, commissioned him to transform the house and help shape the gardens.
Through historic illustrations, newly commissioned photographs and original plans, the exhibition written by historian Rory Fraser reveals how Vanbrugh helped turn Stowe into one of the great aristocratic houses of its age.
Visitors can also discover the Vanbrugh-designed features that still survive in the famous Stowe gardens today.
Free with admission to Stowe House – please note that tickets are released exactly one month in advance.

Red Arrows Rooftop Tour at Stowe
A Rooftop View Like No Other: The Red Arrows at Stowe House
You heard us right. This year, we’re exploring the possibility of an extraordinary VIP experience: a rooftop tour of Stowe House, paired with a breathtaking view of a Red Arrows flight display.
From the rooftop, you’ll enjoy sweeping panoramic views across Stowe’s historic landscape gardens and out across five counties beyond — an unrivalled vantage point as the Red Arrows take to the skies over our neighbour, Silverstone Race Circuit, during the British Grand Prix weekend.
This is a rare chance to witness one of Britain’s most iconic aerial displays without the crowds, traffic, or motorsport focus of the Grand Prix itself. Simply an elevated, elegant way to experience the spectacle.
As with all aviation events, this opportunity is weather-dependent. Closer to the time, we’ll closely monitor forecasts and official Red Arrows display confirmations. If conditions align, a very limited number of tickets will be released. This will be an adult only event. Please note: due to the nature of this event, short-notice cancellations may occur as a result of weather conditions.
Join our waiting list now to be the first to know if tickets go on sale.
Places will be strictly limited and released on a first-come, first-served basis — so pencil the date in and be ready.

Four pairs of soulmates meet in the mysterious Forest of Arden. One pair leap straight into bed. Another pair are instantaneously dumbstruck by each other’s beauty and pledge their undying troth. The third pair torment each other: he showers chaste love upon her which she haughtily rejects - yet secretly she enjoys the flattery. The fourth pair go further still, playfully blurring their roles and identities to such an extent that flirting becomes more pain than pleasure, and Love itself is pushed to the limit of its endurance – and beyond. Throughout the summer Shakespeare’s iconic comedy will be performed where its action is set – in the great outdoors, by a 5-strong cast of classically trained professional actors. Multi international award-winning Illyria has an unmatched reputation for excellence, forged over three decades, that dominates the outdoor touring theatre sector. Join them this summer for a memorable night of laughter and romance under the stars.

Outdoor Theatre: Pirates of Penzance performed by Illyria
Join Illyria for a memorable evening at Stowe, full of wit and charm!
Frederick, accidentally apprenticed to Pirates as a child, is indentured to the Pirate King until his 21st birthday. On the day he reaches 21 he leaves the ship, announcing that he now intends to dedicate his life to the Pirates’ destruction. The Pirate King checks the contract’s small print – and realises that as Frederick’s birthday is 29th February on a leap year he has only had four birthdays and is actually indentured for another 63 years. With only the Penzance constabulary to protect him, will Frederick be forced to serve the pirates until he is 84? And will his sweetheart, Mabel, wait for him that long? Performed by a six-strong cast of actor/singers with fully orchestrated accompaniment, The Pirates of Penzance boasts such gloriously memorable songs as “To be a Pirate King!”; “Modern Major General” and “A Policeman’s Lot is Not a Happy One”. With razor sharp satire and glittering wit, it remains as fresh as if it had been written today.
Tickets must be purchased in advance and are available through Ticket Source.

‘Vanbrugh’s Alterations and Additions to Stowe House’ Talk
Architect Francis Terry presents new research into Sir John Vanbrugh’s architectural contribution to Stowe House, reconsidering the scale and ambition of his designs and their later alteration. This talk is one of a lecture series held monthly, exploring shared themes from the individual perspectives of our speakers and reflecting the continuing debate that makes Stowe so compelling.
This lecture will explain the ideas and influences on a series of recently completed drawings by architect Francis Terry, that investigate and reconstruct Sir John Vanbrugh’s contribution to the architecture of Stowe House.
Vanbrugh’s involvement has long been obscured by limited surviving documentation and by extensive later alterations to the building. Working from a drawing of Stowe by Vanbrugh’s frequent collaborator, Charles Bridgeman, the early plans by William Cleere, and the Rigaud views of 1739, the lecture will explore how Vanbrugh sought to alter and adapt the existing late seventeenth-century house. The lecture will also re-examine Vanbrugh’s likely intentions for the North and South fronts, including towers, porticos, and colonnades that were later simplified or altered—possibly by James Gibbs following Vanbrugh’s death. Particular attention will be given to the ‘houses of office’ on the east and west ends, the only part clearly identified as Vanbrugh’s work. This study offers new insights into how much Vanbrugh’s bold Baroque vision was modified or erased within a

‘Sir John Vanbrugh and the Making of Stowe’ Talk
Michael Bevington explores Sir John Vanbrugh’s role in shaping Stowe, examining the architectural and landscape ideas that defined its early development. This talk is one of a lecture series held monthly, exploring shared themes from the individual perspectives of our speakers and reflecting the continuing debate that makes Stowe so compelling.
This lecture reviews Sir John Vanbrugh’s time and work at Stowe, examining the archaeological evidence for his buildings both at Stowe House and within the garden. It considers how Lord Cobham drew upon the talents of Vanbrugh and Charles Bridgeman to shape a new landscape vision that reflected his political and philosophical outlook.
Doors open for this event at 5.45pm and there shall be a 60-minute talk followed by audience questions.

'The Gothic Library at Stowe: A Reappraisal' Talk
George Clarke Prize winner, Dr Ralph St Clair Wade reconsiders the origins and significance of the Gothic Library at Stowe, one of the earliest interiors of the Gothic Revival. This talk is one of a lecture series held monthly at Stowe.
Last year’s winner of the George Clarke Prize, Dr Ralph St Clair Wade, shall present his latest research on the Gothic Library at Stowe. (The George Clarke Prize is a biennial award granted by the Hall Bequest Trust for original research into the history, architecture and landscape of Stowe House. The prize encourages new scholarship based on the estate’s extensive archive of more than 350,000 papers based at the Huntington Library (California), with winners presenting their findings through lectures and publications).
The Gothic Library at Stowe House, Buckinghamshire is a rare survival. Commissioned by the 1st Marquess of Buckingham, the Library is significant as the only Gothic interior designed by the distinguished classicist Sir John Soane (1753–1837). In itself, it is one of the earliest interiors of the Gothic Revival.
But why the departure from Stowe’s famous classicism? This talk takes a fresh look at the room’s accepted origin story and considers the role of Mary, Marchioness of Buckingham (1758–1812), and her Catholic chaplain, Charles O’Connor.
A 60-minute talk followed by audience questions
Entrance is free, but will need to have been booked beforehand through the Stowe House website. The ticket shall include a welcome drink on arrival at 5.30pm before the talk starts at 6.00pm
