The impressively creative Williams’s new film is a haunted, social-realist drama with moments of thriller and even horror. And he isn’t shy of stabbing us with an old-fashioned jump scare towards the end. A lonely pensioner injures her wrist and is befriended by her younger neighbour, the owner of an alarming dog. Her son, feeling guilty about his previous neglect of his mother, stirs up serious tensions between them, which have alarming consequences.
