Hamnet (12A) at The Film Place

First the book by Maggie O’Farrell, then the play (with the RSC) and now the mesmerising film that dramatizes the tragic death of Hamnet, only son of Agnes and William Shakespeare and how his death (perhaps) led to the writing of Hamlet.  That Hamnet died of the plague is true; whether the event spawned one of the greatest plays ever written is conjecture.  But the film belongs to Jessie Buckley.  Winner of both BAFTA & OSCAR Best Actress awards, she gives us a whole new image of Anne Hathaway (hitherto only associated with a cottage!) as a passionate, intelligent and independent wife and mother, careless of the Elizabethan strictures imposed on women but fiercely protective of her children.   The final scenes will have you reaching for the tissues!
