Irrepressible Iranian director Jafar Panahi apparently had the idea for this, his latest film, while detained in Tehran’s notorious Nevin prison. Vahid, a mechanic, suspects that a man who pulls into his garage after hitting a dog is the sadistic prison guard who tortured him when he was detained by the authorities. He recognises the creaking of the man’s prosthetic leg, but because he was always blindfolded during interrogation, he brings together a handful of his fellow ex-prisoners to confirm the man's identity before deciding what to do with him. A tense, thought-provoking and darkly comic exploration of justice and morality under authoritarian rule. Winner of the 2025 Palme d’Or.
