Young Frankenstein (12A) at The Film Place

  • Vinson Building Hunter Street Buckingham MK18 1EG (map)

Famed for his inimitable ‘spoof’ comedies of the Hollywood blockbusters, Mel Brooks said of this film that “it is by far the best movie I ever made”. Co-directed and written with Gene Wilder who plays Dr Frankenstein, it was deliberately shot in black and white, harking back to its predecessors of the 1930’s. The ‘young’ Frankenstein of the title is the grandson of the first Frankenstein to appear on screen in 1931. He attempts to distance himself from the family’s traits but inevitably he is drawn back to the old family castle in Transylvania where he discovers for himself how to create his own monster. Parodying the horror movie, it remains a genuinely inventive comedy, inspiring its star studded cast to create an “all time great”, which absolutely has to be seen on the big screen.
