Hard to believe that the Downton Abbey saga has been a much-loved story on our TV and Film Screens for 25 years, but it seems that its creator, Julian Fellowes, has concluded that it now needs a fond farewell. It’s the 1930s and the Crawley family fortunes are teetering, beset by the financial crash and Lady Mary’s scandalous divorce.  Societal change is afoot both upstairs and downstairs.  Will Downton and its doughty inhabitants rise to the new challenges?  The film pays a fitting tribute to the late Maggie Smith, whose presence is touchingly remembered. What better way to start our new season in January 2026?
