What is Diwali?
Diwali follows the lunar calendar and is often referred to as the festival of lights. It is a religious festival celebrated by Hindus, Jains, Sikhs and some Buddhists across the world. The festival celebrates new beginnings and the triumph of good over evil, knowledge over ignorance and light over dark. Diwali comes from the Sanskrit word 'Deepavali' and means 'row of lights'. On Diwali, clay oil lamps 'diyas' are lit in the home and in public places such as places of worship. The lighting of the diya symbolises 'inner light' and it is encouraged to spread light, compassion and kindness to others just as you would use a diya to light up another diya.
