‘Moving the Mail’ at Buckinghamshire Railway Centre

  • Buckinghamshire Railway Centre Station Road Quainton HP22 4BY (map)

Learn all about how the Travelling Post Office was an integral part of the railways at this event at Buckingham Railway Centre!

Their ‘Moving the Mail’ event will be a fun day out for families and railway enthusiasts alike.

There will be a special Family Trail encouraging children to find pictures placed around the Railway Centre’s site. Visitors will be invited to report their successful completion of the trail to stewards in the Travelling Post Office (TPO) carriages, where they can also try sorting letters into the historic sorting frames.

Illustrated talks will be given in the Visitor Centre Cinema Coach. The subjects covered will be the history of the Great Western TPO and the Mail Bag Exchange Apparatus. In the TPO carriages, visitors can peruse a poster display on the history of the postal service and the Great Train Robbery.

All this will be alongside their normal ‘Steaming Days’ activities and so they will have a full-size steam train in action, ready to take you for a ride up and down their track! They will also have miniature ride-on trains which are run by their sister society VAMES (there is a small £1.50 charge for this per person – under 3s are free).  The rest of the site will be open including the Railway Museum and the Visitor Centre with Gift Shop and Railway Café.

There are 25-acres of Railwayland to explore!  Come and enjoy your local heritage railway!
